Additional Information

Artist Statement The depictions of “los Muertos” (the deceased) pays an homage to family and loved ones by encapsulating the boldness, fragility, and cyclical quality that life and the celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) present. Conceptualizing the theme of “los Muertos” is an opportunity to explore the depth of my roots and provide more visual representation of a part of my culture that is typically misunderstood. In showcasing traditional and non-traditional imagery in my prints and photography, I am modernizing the visuals of the holiday and how it represents the various people that Latino culture encapsulate. Printmaking and photography allow me to develop imagery through an extensive process that becomes a physical representation of how life is a series of events that culminate into one moment. I integrate a variety of techniques to photo manipulate my photography imagery to enhance the ambience and message of a photo. This process relays in my printmaking work as well, I begin to draw out images and finalize them using graphic programs to expand the design possibilities. The reward is a life of moments and memories that describe who we are through a process of how we got there. Just as in etching the reward is depicted by the reveal of the final print. As the print is lifted and examined we can see the various textures and burnishing that was done during the process of its creation. Showing the beauty that life can offer and that death should not be feared as it represents that we have lived. And to truly live we must embrace the layers that we encompass so we may be able to see the prints we leave behind.
