Devin Martinez is a Houston-based Graphic Designer and Printmaker. She is currently working towards her BFA at the University of Houston - Clear lake, and is in the process of applying for graduate school.
Her current works combine both geometric and organic elements, and explores themes such as her own mental health, which is typically stigmatized and ignored within the Latinx community.
Artist Statement My current works are inspired by geometry and nature, with an emphasis on highlighting the juxtaposition between organic and inorganic forms. This concept is explored by depicting living matter, which is representative of the mind, within geometric shapes to simulate stability. Of these geometric shapes, the triangle motif occurs most frequently within my works. Having been diagnosed with both anxiety and depression, I’ve found myself relating to the duality of the triangle. While resting on it’s base, the triangle brings a sense of harmony to the composition but when flipped on it's point, it can communicate feelings of tension, instability, and anxiety. The marriage of symmetry and balance through the screen printing process has been a therapeutic tool that helps by reestablishing a sense of order in my life. Through my art, I hope to bring awareness to and start a dialogue about mental health, which is typically stigmatized and ignored within the Latinx community.
